Technical and practical questions about the NEWOLUTION energy management system – drawn from project discussions with storage manufacturers, system integrators, project developers and operators.
What is an EMS?
An energy management system coordinates generation, storage, loads and the grid connection point in a shared control loop. It continuously measures energy flows, analyses them and intervenes via defined setpoints – with the aim of respecting technical limits and deploying the available energy where it is needed.
The NEWOLUTION EMS is a supervisory master EMS: it sits above the manufacturer systems and coordinates heterogeneous assets from a single shared control logic.
Individual manufacturer systems – BMS, PCS, inverters, charge controllers – each see only their own component. They cannot optimise across the system: a BMS does not know how much charging power is being drawn. A charge controller does not know the state of charge of the battery. Without a supervisory layer, there is no shared operating strategy.
The NEWOLUTION EMS closes this gap without replacing the manufacturer systems.
The focus is on projects with battery storage from around 200 kWh, typically 1 MWh and above, up to the multi-MW and multi-MWh range. Smaller projects without significant coordination requirements are not addressed – the effort of a supervisory control platform is generally not proportionate there.
EMS vs. BMS / PCS
The BMS (Battery Management System) monitors and protects the battery cells: cell voltages, temperatures, state of charge and safety limits. It is part of the battery product and is the storage manufacturer's responsibility.
The PCS (Power Conversion System) converts the battery's DC power to AC and controls power flows at the grid interface. It also contains safety-critical protection logic.
The EMS operates above these systems: it issues setpoints (e.g. charge power, discharge power, priorities), analyses overarching measurements and coordinates all assets in a shared operating strategy. The NEWOLUTION EMS does not touch OEM BMS or PCS protection logic.
No. The OEM BMS and all safety-critical manufacturer functions remain unchanged and in the manufacturer's responsibility. NEWOLUTION provides only the supervisory control, integration and visualisation layer above them.
Battery storage integration
Integration uses the interface provided by the storage manufacturer – typically Modbus TCP, CAN or a proprietary protocol. The EMS reads measurements (SOC, power, temperatures, operating state) and writes setpoints (charge power, discharge power, mode) according to the supervisory operating strategy.
What matters is which data and setpoints the manufacturer has actually released. This is assessed per project and per device as part of the technical qualification.
The architecture is designed for this. Practical feasibility depends on what interfaces and setpoints the deployed systems provide and how they behave under supervisory coordination. This is assessed per project.
In principle yes – provided the existing system's interface is accessible and provides suitable data and setpoints. Older systems often have limited interface quality. The technical qualification clarifies what is possible before an integration project is started.
PV, charging infrastructure and further loads
PV inverters are connected via their available interface (Modbus, SunSpec, manufacturer-specific protocol). The EMS reads feed-in power and can – where the inverter allows – issue curtailment setpoints. At the reference site, 340 kWp of PV capacity is integrated into the system.
Yes. At the reference site, the NEWOLUTION EMS coordinates 40 integrated charging points with around 1.7 MW of installed charging capacity through a grid connection of only 100 kW. Both AC and DC charging points are integrated. Specific protocol support is assessed per manufacturer and model.
Yes, provided the devices have an accessible interface and are controllable. The control architecture is open to further assets. Which devices can be integrated concretely depends on the available interfaces and released setpoints.
Load management and peak shaving
The NEWOLUTION EMS actively limits grid power to the available connection capacity and allocates the available power according to priority across charging points and further controllable loads. At the reference site, around 1.7 MW of installed charging capacity is coordinated through a 100 kW connection.
Quantified financial savings, payback promises or guaranteed grid tariff reductions are not given – these depend on the electricity tariff, network charge structure and individual load profile.
Critical loads such as production equipment, heat sources or defined charging points can be prioritised. The EMS aims for continuous operation with prioritisation rather than hard shutdowns. The prioritisation logic is configured per project.
RoadmapAutomatic response to spot market prices and commercial optimisation of charging and discharging times is under development. It is not currently within the available scope and cannot be ordered today.
Existing installations
In principle yes – provided the existing components have accessible interfaces. The technical qualification clarifies which data can be read, which setpoints may be written and how the components behave if communication fails. The analysis then defines which functions are realisable.
Components without a suitable interface can be captured indirectly via meters – they are then visible but not actively controllable. Whether that is sufficient for the desired operating strategy is assessed per project. We do not claim universal compatibility.
Interfaces
The architecture is designed to be vendor-agnostic. Common protocols such as Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, CAN, SunSpec, OCPP (for charging infrastructure) and others are supported where the counterpart provides an accessible interface. Universal compatibility with every manufacturer is deliberately not claimed.
What matters is interface access: which data is available locally, which setpoints may be written, and how the component behaves if communication fails. This is assessed per project and per device.
Interfaces to external systems – such as control rooms, ERP systems or higher-level platforms – are agreed per project. The specific scope depends on requirements and is defined in the project definition.
Local control and fail-safe operation
Control runs locally on a controller at the site. Data retention, monitoring and mobile access are handled through a connected platform. Local operation therefore remains functional even if the outbound connection is disrupted.
Because control runs locally, plant operation is maintained if the internet connection fails. Monitoring and remote access are unavailable during that time. How individual connected components behave if communication fails is part of the technical qualification.
The statement refers precisely to the supervisory control layer: operational management and monitoring run on our own infrastructure and are therefore independent of hardware manufacturers' remote access at that layer. Full independence at the hardware level – from the BMS or PCS manufacturer, for example – is expressly not claimed.
Visualisation and monitoring
The dedicated web GUI shows energy flows, states of charge, operating states and priorities in a business view. The technical deep-dive analysis covers frequency, SOC profiles, operating modes and traceable logging. Which data points are available concretely depends on the connected components and their interfaces.
Mobile access and an app interface are provided for in the platform. The concrete availability and scope of functions are agreed per project.
The system supports configurable alarms for defined events or threshold violations. Notification paths and threshold values are configured per project.
Collaboration with manufacturers and integrators
Storage manufacturers provide the hardware and OEM BMS. NEWOLUTION provides the supervisory control layer that integrates their systems without touching the OEM BMS or manufacturer protection logic. Collaboration starts with the technical qualification: interfaces, setpoints and fail-safe behaviour are assessed and documented together.
No manufacturers are currently listed as qualified or confirmed partners. The NEWOLUTION Ready programme is being built up.
System integrators get a vendor-agnostic control platform with the NEWOLUTION EMS on which they can build their project configurations. The interfaces to the components, the operating strategies and the visualisation are configured together. Commissioning, functional testing and documentation are coordinated jointly.
Project process
A typical project moves through three phases: Analyse – understand and document the specific project's energy data, load profiles, interfaces and requirements. Integrate – connect generation, storage, loads, meters and the grid connection point into the control platform. Optimise – activate operating strategies, coordinate energy flows and continuously improve plant operation.
Typical project sizes start at around 200 kWh, with a focus on 1 MWh and above.
The technical qualification clarifies before the actual integration project whether and how a component can be integrated: available interfaces, readable data points, writable setpoints, dynamic limits and behaviour if communication fails. The result is a defensible statement on integrability – not a non-binding "might work" assessment.
The solution is regulatorily flexible and can be integrated cost-efficiently. Where certified control components are required, the EMS logic is combined with the respective mandated components. The concrete arrangement is made per project and in coordination with the responsible grid operator. Legal assessments and the specific certification path are not within our scope.
Roadmap
Three topics are under development and cannot be ordered today:
- Dynamic electricity prices: Automatic response to spot market prices and commercial optimisation of charging and discharging times.
- Response to negative electricity prices: During phases of negative exchange prices, solar power should preferably be stored rather than simply curtailed.
- Trading and electricity market integration: Trading is expressly not a currently available product. No revenues from trading activities are promised.
These topics are deliberately communicated as roadmap items and are not presented as currently available scope.
